JOIN THE RACE TO GREEN STEEL!

Today’s steel industry relies heavily on fossil fuels both to manufacture steel and power the steelmaking process. To transform the global steel industry with clean technologies by 2050, steel buyers and policymakers must send a clear signal that there is a steady, robust demand for green steel.

On Your Marks.

Ask for an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized environmental claim from a manufacturer that provides transparent, audited information about a product’s environmental impact throughout its life cycle.

EPDs act as a nutrition label for different steel products, allowing automakers to shop with confidence and make apples to apples comparisons of the carbon footprints (ton CO2e per ton of steel) of each product.

First Movers Coalition

Join the First Movers Coalition

Members of the First Movers Coalition have committed to purchase at least 10% near-zero steel by volume by 2030. This commitment can be met through primary and secondary steel, with a sliding scale used to account for the level of CO2 emissions according to the amount of scrap used.

What is FMC?

The First Movers Coalition is a global public-private partnership which aims to aggregate private sector demand for clean technologies in order to spur investment and to decarbonize emissions-intensive industrial sectors such as steelmaking. Launched at COP26 in 2021, the First Movers Coalition is comprised of over 95 companies including automakers such as General Motors, Ford Motor Co., Volvo, and more.

Join SteelZero

Members of SteelZero have committed to buy and use 50% lower-emissions steel by 2030 and 100% net-zero steel by 2050. Qualifying steel products can be primary or secondary lower-emissions steel that meets either the ResponsibleSteel™ standard or Science Based Targets initiative framework or low-embodied carbon steel as defined by SteelZero’s sliding scale threshold. Making a strong commitment to 50% lower-emissions steel by 2030 will set a clear pathway for these market actors to use 100% steel that has achieved net-zero emissions by 2050.

What is SteelZero?

SteelZero is a global initiative from the Climate Group and ResponsibleSteel™ to drive market demand for net-zero steel. Companies procuring steel include automakers, public procurement bodies, steel specifiers such as designers and engineers, or organizations in the steel supply chain after the production of crude steel. These market actors can use their purchasing power to shift the global steel industry toward responsible production and sourcing of steel. Automakers like Polestar and Volvo have already joined the SteelZero initiative.

Join RMI’s Sustainable Steel Buyers Platform

The Sustainable Steel Buyers Platform (SSBP), launched by RMI a clean energy nonprofit (founded as Rocky Mountain Institute), is the central platform for buyers to accelerate near-zero emissions steel offtake. Our goal is to advance the market and enable the investment case for breakthrough clean technologies.

We are convening committed buyers (members include Microsoft, Nextracker, Invenergy, and Trammell Crow Company) in North America in a collaborative procurement process to advance the deployment of a first-of-a-kind near-zero emissions steel facility.

We believe a group of ambitious buyers representing a collectively large offtake volume and aligned on requirements including emissions performance can move quickly to initiate facility-level change. The buyers will work together in a two-stage process: first, a request-for-information (RFI) followed by a formal request-for-proposal (RFP).

We welcome all ambitious buyers committed to establishing offtake for near-zero emissions steel to deliver on their emissions reduction targets to join. The North American RFP will be open to all steel producers (and their upstream & technology partners) to submit a response.

The SSBP is complementary to efforts that focus on gaining commitments and pledges towards lower emissions steel, by providing the next step towards offtake for buyers. For more information, refer to this webinar.
