TAKING COAL OUT OF CARS

Procuring low-emissions steel today will lay the groundwork for green steel tomorrow.

Steel is responsible for 30%-50% of embodied emissions in a car today thanks to the industry’s heavy reliance on coal. Clean energy technologies like green hydrogen have the potential to replace coal in the steelmaking process, but the industry must begin scaling up this technology today to deliver low-cost green steel tomorrow.

Automakers can address this major source of pollution and join the race to green steel. Here’s how:

Assess

the environmental impact of steel products used today.

Commit

to purchase at least 10% near-zero steel by 2030.

Join

a coalition of companies, market actors, and more to achieve 100% fossil-free green steel by 2050.

Green Steel Initiatives

First Movers Coalition

10% near-zero steel by 2030

50% lower-emissions steel by 2030, & 100% net zero steel by 2050 or earlier

2 million metric tons of near-zero emissions steel by 2030
